Home Horizon

Funded by the UK Space Agency. Welcoming early partners.

Every home in your stock, ranked by summer heat risk

Home Horizon combines Earth observation satellite data with open data about buildings to rank every home by relative exposure to overheating. Plan remediation before summer, and know where to look first when a heatwave is on the way.

Summer heat is a health risk. The UK Health Security Agency's interim estimate is 2,877 heat-associated deaths in England across two heat episodes in May and June 2026. Read the UKHSA report

Why now: 30 November2026

From this date, Awaab's Law extends to excess heat in social housing in England. Every report of a significant or emergency hazard starts a fixed clock.

24 hours
to investigate and make safe an emergency hazard
10 working days
to investigate a significant hazard

A hot spell can bring many reports at once, each with its own clock. And overheating is hard to see: a home inspected in January tells you little about its bedrooms in July.

Two ways Home Horizon helps

One ranking of your whole stock, put to work before summer and again when the heat arrives.

Get ahead of summer

See which homes are most exposed to overheating across your whole stock, so remediation and investment reach them first.

Where retrofit follows PAS 2035:2023, the retrofit design must include measures to reduce or limit overheating, recorded by the Retrofit Designer, with CIBSE TM59 among the named methods. Home Horizon shows where that attention matters most.

Most exposedLeast exposed

Act before a heatwave

Next stage

When a UKHSA Heat-Health Alert is issued, or local forecasts show a hot spell coming, Home Horizon will point your teams to the most exposed homes in the area, so checks, advice and contact reach them before the hottest days.

  1. Hot spell forecast or heat-health alert
  2. Most exposed homes in the area, listed first
  3. Teams check those homes first

How it works

  1. From above

Earth observation satellites show which streets and surroundings run hotter on clear summer days.

  2. Home by home

Open data about the buildings themselves tells apart homes on the same street.

  3. Grounded in real homes

We calibrate the ranking against indoor measurements taken in real homes.

Evidence you can stand behind

Satellites see roofs, roads and ground, not the inside of homes. So Home Horizon ranks relative risk rather than forecasting indoor temperatures.

We fix how we will judge the ranking before we look at the data, and we publish how well it performs, whether the results are positive, partial or null. That includes a full summer test in 2027.

Get involved

Home Horizon is in development with UK Space Agency funding. Early partners help shape it around how landlords actually work.

Social landlords
Tell us how you find overheating today and what would help most when a heatwave is on the way. Empty homes between lets can also help ground the ranking in real rooms. Results for your homes go only to you.
Researchers and sector bodies
We share our method and results with the housing and overheating research community. Tell us what you would want to see.
Technology and data partners
If your data, sensors, forecasting or housing platform could help landlords act on heat risk, we would like to compare notes.
Investors and funders
Home Horizon starts with social housing and Awaab's Law. If you are interested in where it goes next, we would be glad to talk.
